Economy vs Business? Is business worth the big bucks?

We recently flew Melbourne to Prague via Dubai. First leg on a Emirates economy and the second leg Emirates business.

Emirates operates the A380-800 on these routes, in economy the layout was 3-4-3 which I personally hate as my partner wants the window and me the aisle, so usually we are stuck with a stranger between us.

First thing I noticed was the room, normally as a 6ft tall person I’m usually cramped in economy, the seat has a comfy pitch 32inches and a generous seat width of 18inches

Each seat has a massive screen of 13.3 inches one of the biggest I have seen in Economy. Things I love is you have both the option of a touch screen that works really well as well as a seperate pullout controller.

Other notable things were the USB ports which were great for phone charging, foldable tray table, double large pocket for storage and jacket hook.

How about business?

It started with our four stop in Dubai where we made our way to the Emirates business lounge.

Located upstairs there are many perks, if you are a business traveller this is free, however guests can now pay $100USD and gain access to this lounge, even if travelling economy. Bargain if you have many hours to kill.

Shower Time

First stop was a shower. You have to put your name down and wait to be called. These are worth the wait! Private room with toilet, shower, fluffy towels, slippers, shavers and gel, toothbrush and toothpaste, seriously I felt like a new man afterwards!

Food & Beverage

Main food area was a massive selection of breads and baked goods, buffet of hot east vs western style dishes as well as fresh fruit, yoghurts and Mediterranean items.

Drinks included self service tea/coffee soft drinks juices wine and beers as well as a selection of spirits and liqueurs.

Overall something for everyone we left feeling full and refuelled.

Board from lounge

Another great part of the Emirates lounge is you can wait and board from the lounge, business straight to the upper class area and straight on the plane.

Emirates Business

Located on the upper deck of the A380 the plane holds 76 Business class seats.

1-2-1 configuration means means easy aisle access over two cabins, one larger at the front and smaller towards back with bar area.

Emirates Bar

The bar area was great, it’s a fun novelty to be able to socialise and drink with fellow passengers whilst on board. The bar had delicious wines, cocktails and spirits available. There was also a good selection of self serve snacks.

Meal service

I must say this area lacked for me, not a huge range of choice and no options to order when you wanted, service was a little unorganised and inconsistent both myself and my partner opted for the roast turkey dinner, they were completely different and sloppy looking. Entree of Mezze to start was nice see below.

Seating

As a couple we opted for the middle seats, these are close together with a divider screen that can be lowered so you can can chat. The space has a mini bar, small iPad like device to control seating and comfort levels. Laying completely flat cabin crew can fit a mattress for ultimate comfort and pillows and duvet. This was truly wonderful. We slept like babies.

The verdict

Based on this flight alone I would say the business class option is certainly great for a very long flight, a treat as a points upgrade, it’s all the components of the Emirates experience that make business worth while, the chauffeur driver each end, the lounges and the flight itself. I would definitely fly them again without hesitation and think it is worth it.
